Army of the Dead Eyes Fall Start

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008 by Ann Lake

In the hustle and bustle of Tuesday night’s Saturn Awards ceremony in Universal City, California, ShockTillYouDrop.com managed to squeeze a mini-update from Zack and Deborah Snyder (300) regarding Army of the Dead which the pair are producing.

With director Matthijs van Heijningen locked in place, Zack, who is busy in post-production on Watchmen, hopes shooting will begin, “Really soon. The studio [Warner Bros.] seems to love our director and love our script. The movie, for me, is all about spectacle and being crazy, so it’s just trying to find a balance with the studio.”

Deborah adds, “We’re hoping to start this fall.”

Written by Joby Harold, Army of the Dead is set in a quarantined Las Vegas in the not-too-distant future and focuses on a father who tries to save his daughter from imminent death in a zombie-infested world.

Commercial filmmaker and visual artist Matthijs van Heijningen is set to make his directorial debut on the Zack Snyder-produced “Army of the Dead” for Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow.

Snyder, who originated the story, is producing with his wife-partner Deborah Snyder via their Warners-based Cruel & Unusual Films.

“Dead” is an action thriller centering on a father’s mission to save his daughter from imminent death in a zombie-infested world. Filmmaker Joby Harold (”Awake”) wrote the screenplay.

Van Heijningen, repped by CAA, is a winner of more than a half-dozen Cannes advertising Lions.

“We were looking for an inventive talent with a unique voice and we found it in Matthijs,” said Snyder, a commercial director-turned-feature filmmaker. “His ability to infuse humor with irony allows him to create compelling stories in 30 seconds. Cruel & Unusual’s Wesley Coller is exec producing. Greg Silverman and Elishia Holmes are overseeing for Warners.

Immersing oneself in the world of the long-awaited big screen adaptation of Watchmen is an enviable, however protracted, duty director Zack Snyder (Dawn of the Dead, 300) committed himself to this year leaving room in his life for not much else. But during this writer’s visit to the Vancouver set (on behalf of ComingSoon.net), ShockTillYouDrop.com found out progress is being made on the Snyder-produced Army of the Dead.

“We’re meeting with directors right now,” co-producer and wife Deborah Snyder exclusively tells us. Under their production banner Cruel & Unusual Films, the Snyders are developing the film for Warner Bros. “That’s a little hard [to do] because we’re here [on set] and every day is killer. We want the right person for it. The script has been turned in to the studio and they’re really happy with it, with pretty minimal notes back, so they said, ‘Hey, let’s get a director.’” (more…)
